Different media- vinyl progression

Rather than just focusing on using vinyl as a design I wanted to try out other materials which i could create 'bold' designs with.
My aim for this is to create colourful backgrounds and black designs over the top.

For this I used a 3D paint pen. I applied it onto plastic so I could move it around the background to create different shapes. It didn't turn out as smooth as I wanted it to.
For this I used a magazine to cut out the shape I wanted and removed the middle, then stuck over my painted background. I like the contrast between the colour of the shapes and the harsh black lines.

Evaluation of Origins unit

In this project I have gained confidence to try out techniques I wouldn't usually use. programme's such as illustrator is something I wouldn't really use but have done so during the project even though its very basic. At the start of the project i enjoyed doing creating different verbs using found objects then drawing from them. This has definitely helped me throughout and it kicked of my project. Trying out the i motion app was interesting but wouldn't have been appropriate for the style of work i wanted to gain.

My research links to my work well as i like to find artists similar to my work and have them inluence my practice also. Artist research is definitely something i like to do as it gets ideas flowing.
Throughout the project i have done quite a lot of drawing as it has helped me with ideas.

I've been developing them into different shapes by progressing each drawing into another using negative space. Using these and my artist influences i have created my own shapes which i have used in some designs for vinyl cutting.

I didn't want to use  too many different materials for the drawings as i wanted to keep it simple and linking with the artists.I decided to try out vinyl cutting because i like how i could use my shapes on illustrator to create a design and can be used on walls and interior etc. during the designing of the vinyl prints i did come across a few difficulties with illustrator but kept trying and got what i wanted. in the future i want to develop my skills in illustrator to create more intricate designs. I would also want create things on a larger scale as i haven't done anything very big before and tend to stay on a smaller scale.Even though some things didn't go to plan with my vinyl designs i lost quite a lot of time and it was out of my comfort zone, but it was a learning curve and expect to have many more in the future.

I've realised that by going out of my comfort zone and trying out things i wouldn't normally use, i can still achieve what i want to and persevering with it pays off.

I feel that i'm making the most of Studio time and independent study days as if i need help i can ask when i'm in the studio and carry it on through independent study days. I've developed in the process of thinking as i have been developing my work and can see it progressing.

Influences-sketchbook-Friday drawing

Some of my drawings throughout my sketchbook...
Friday drawing...
I picked these two drawings specifically from the Friday drawing sessions as they are in the same style as the drawings I've done for my vinyl designs.
I looked at wall art, street art and stickers as I thought the vinyl would look really nice on a wall or a large area. For now I want to experiment with it as maybe in the future I can think about creating something on a larger scale.

Vinyl designs

Using my drawings I created designs in illustrator to then transfer to the vinyl printer.
I scanned some of my drawings in and used the pen tool to trace over. Changing the size, repeating and overlapping the shapes creates a design in the same style of my drawings. Unfortunately I don't think this would work as a vinyl cut as it's too tricky And complicated for it to work as a whole.
Creating an outline so then the printer can cut it out. I would be left with the thin outline to then peel off.
Adding other shapes in the design. The shapes fit together nicely. I would like to try this out on a bigger scale and maybe take it further and use the vinyl to stick on walls.

Drawing development

I used my 'finding form' drawings to draw from. I wanted to create different drawings showing progress and how the artists I've looked at have influenced me.
Finding form drawings: pegs...
Looking at these previous drawings I then created new ones thinking about Maija Louekari's work, continuous line drawing and a limited range of media. For this I used watercolour and pen...
Turning the paper around each time I changed the media abled me to overlap and create different shapes. I then used some of the negative space in the drawings to fill in and create new shapes.
This still has the same technique but creates a different pattern.
'Finding form' gather ...
Doing the same process of developing drawings trying to find shapes and pattern. I also thought about using shells and natural form as some of my previous drawing and laser cuts remind me of this.

I still used the artists I looked at as a reference.
Bold shapes under line drawings.
In most of my drawings I found it better to use my opposite hand and it created more of a messier, looser line.
As I want to do vinyl cutting I had to simplify my drawings down and select shapes from them. This is quite abstract.
Selecting shapes and trying out compositions repeating and changing the size of the shapes. I could use this as a vinyl design with a coloured background.
I liked drawing the shapes in different pens as it shows different thicknesses. Using continuous drawing but the same shape keeps it simple, overlapping ables the design to become more than a single shape.

Using collage to create block shapes from my drawings.
Thinking of ways to change the collage, adding other shapes over the top (could be vinyl)this creates different layers to the drawing, and brings more of the negative space into the shapes.
I used ink to draw the shapes from the collage and added cut outs over the top. I could use the vinyl over the top of backgrounds like this. These link all my drawings together by using shape and colour.

Artist influences

Gabriel Moreno
I like the contrast between the bright background colours using inks, with the bold black lines over the top.
He uses black lines to define other simple shapes in the the hair. I think my drawings show resemblance to his as they are contemporary and overlap.

Maija Louekari
The use of single continuous line drawing is apparent in this piece, I like how it's all overlapped and the colours are simple.
This one looks more digital compared to the others but I like how it's also overlapped. The black patterns over the top show detail and repeat.
The use of grey pen and black creates a layered affect like the first picture It's continuous and flows well. I would describe her work as geometric, bold, continuous, busy, and stylised.

Orla Kiely

Her work shows repeat and a good use of colour. The neutral earthy colours go so well together and are equally as modern as the design. I like to keep things quite simple and the shapes in her work show this. Maybe overlapping shapes in the same style would work well.

Laser cutting

Using my drawings from the 3D paper manipulation task, I created designs using illustrator then transferring them to CAD to turn the lines of the design into red. Meaning the laser will cut them out.
The laser works best when the material is quite thick, I tried a thinner piece than canvas and it was too fiddly to deal with once it was finished.
The laser is quick and is a great way to create clean cut designs. The simpler the design, the better the outcome.
Canvas...
This works well as the material is strong and even with the triangles cut out, it's still durable.
Linen...
I really like to work with linen as its neutral  and simple yet effective. The laser worked well with this and I like the burnt edges around the triangles.
Sheer organza doesn't work very well with the laser as it doesn't hold very well. The silhouette from it is really nice and easy to manipulate.
