Designers...
Mae Engelgeer

As concrete and texture influence my work, Engelgeer's work inspires me. I love how she uses tones of grey with a line of colour.

Sarah Bagshaw

This digital design shows layer and repeat. As I am using linear shapes in my work this piece of hers links well. I also want to make a few designs digital.

Luli Sanchez

Sanchez creates a variation of designs contrasting in shape, design and technique. I like this one as it looks like the colour has been bleached away creating a floral pattern. Using neutral discharge in my designs will create the same affect.

Branding-Marimekko digital samples

Final digital collection Spring/Summer
Tea towel designs.
Scandinavian summer.

I made these two designs bolder than the others as they would work on their own. I kept the design simple and quite 'block' like as I think marimekko customers would want this.
I am happy with the samples and think they reflect the marimekko style with a slight twist. I wanted to show the boldness Marimekko show strongly in their designs as well as more delicate prints.

Branding

For my Marimekko digital designs I want to have them layered still keeping a delicate yet bright design. For this I will create brushes on photoshop using my drawings. Changing the opacity on the brushes will able the prints to keep a watercolour 'hand painted' effect, yet still digital and bold.

Drawing my orchid using brusho inks. I made this design bold so I can scan into photoshop creating my designs.

I thought my drawings of the orchid petals looked pear shaped so drew pears keeping it continuous.
I'm going to use these colours in my digital designs as well as some existing Marimekko colours.
As I will layer the brushes I want some to be bold and some drawn outlines of shapes. Marimekko create quite bold designs but some look like watercolour, therefor I will mix the two.

Self initiated- Sample testing

For my self initiated brief (Line and order, Remove and repeat)I've decided to use shades of grey with the influence of concrete as colour and texture.
Starting to dye different cottons and silks different shades of grey.

I want to keep the base colour of the fabrics more subtle so I can add bright colour over after discharging away the direct dye.

The neutral discharge pulled through the screen worked exactly how I wanted and shows contrast. The sample above is on Moleskin cotton which has quite a high density. I wanted to experiment with different fabrics but prefer thinner cottons and silks as this reminds me of something you'd use to clean your car!

Development

Collecting more inspiration for Marimekko and Line and order.
Plates in TKmaxx. Showing order in groups.
Mug drawings. Rough outlines using teal marker.

Floral inspo- Marimekko
Not my usual go to for inspiraion but links in with the theme for my marimekko prints.

Contour drawing of an orchid. This works well with the bold green and fine grey and shows the flower to be delicate and a contrast between the stem and petals.

Live briefs

I have decided to do Two live briefs in this unit. One being Bradford textiles and the other an internal brief: Branding.

I have chosen the PRINT category for Bradford textiles;
'A Textile design suitable for domestic curtains, upholstery, cushions and blinds, drawn in repeat'

I aim to create a conventional print for this using screen print for upholstery.

For the branding project I have chosen the design company Marimekko.
by choosing this brand I am going slightly out my comfort zone because their designs are very bright and bold, where as I don't really work like that but i want to push myself and try different styles. I aim to create digital samples on photoshop. This is also pushing me as I'm not too confident using photoshop but hope to learn more and gain skills.
